Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540 - c. 1596) born in Tawistock, Devon, England. Born and lived in the golden age of exploration. He was born in a cottage of rough tree branches; first born out of twelve sons. His father was called Edmund Drake and his mother was called Mary Mylwaye. He started his sea career at the age of thirteen by becoming an apprentice member of a bark trading crew.
Achievements
World famous for being the second person to lead a voyage around the world (First person was Margellan). Discovered Point Loma (close to San Diego) inhabited by genorous natives, who kindly gave them food and water. Helped to defeat the Spanish Armada when they invaded England in 1585, after 1588 when the war ended, all of Spain hated him. A year after the war he was assigned a task to prevent King Philip II from claiming the Portugeuse crown, but failed.

On his journey around the world Francis Drake robbed a Spanish port filled with treasures including seven million pounds, thirty six kilograms of gold, a golden crucifix, jewels and twenty six tones of silver; this made Spain extremely angry. He continued around Cape Horn and upwards towards Canada. He arrived at Point Loma inhabited by hostile Mapuches who seriously injured him. He continued over the International Date Line, then went south over Australia and arrived back at England in 1580.

After Francis Drake committed many robberies and conflicts with Spain, the Spanish became extremely angry so they declared war in 1585. They sent an armada to attack England but were defeated.
